Signs That Labour Is Imminent

  • The ‘show’ – this is a wad of clear or slightly bloody jelly. Your show might happen several days before the onset of labour, so there is no need to call the hospital.
  • You may suffer from vomiting or diarrhoea – this is just your body’s way of detoxing in preparation for birth.
  • Contractions – these will get more intense and closer together as labour progresses.
  • Waters break – you must call the hospital if your waters break, especially if the water is not clear or has a strong odour (as this may mean that baby has done a poo, which can be dangerous if not treated).
  • You will no doubt be very excited and nervous when you think that your labour is beginning, however it is important that you try and get some sleep.
