For many women, myself included, maternity leave is something to look forward to and enjoy.

However for some women, getting back to work as soon as possible is the order of the day.  Of course for many women this will be a case of necessity rather than absolute choice but for a small minority taking maternity leave is seen as a sign of weakness....

Er, hello?? Even putting aside the fact that physically you will probably feel like you've been hit by a bus (repeatedly) what about spending some time with your gorgeous new bubba?

Not a week seems to go by without somebody extoling (or critising) modern parenting methods.

The most recent critic is the televion and radio presenter Kirsty Young, who has lambasted parents who try to shape their children into 'baby Einsteins'.

In a Radio Times article, the 41 year old presenter said people were preoccupied with children as an "extension of their own success".

This whole issue of new mothers and work seems to be a hot topic of late in the press, only yesterday my post was based on this issue. Now, another study has been published, this time by the NCT which indicates that a third of new mothers stated their relationship with their boss had worsened on returning back to work after maternity leave.

The NCT surveyed 1500 new mothers, with 2 in 5 describing the return to work as "difficult"  and a third of those surveyed believed there chances of being promoted had reduced.

Whilst this may fill some pregnant working mothers or new mothers on maternity leave with dread, this information must be taken with a pinch of salt as there are so many factors at play here. Some may just be the perception of the mother, and of course it depends on how flexible your boss is and the company you work for. You are protected by the law that employers have to give you the same level/renumeration on returning to work even if your job changes, but as I said yesterday, the whole issue of mothers working is a very emotive one as it certainly not without it's challenges.
